Roatan or as it is known in Honduras as Isla de Roatan is a beautiful island located in Central America. With white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters with very little waves, Roatan is a family friendly destination with activities for the beach, rainforests and wildlife.
Dive Roatan
The outstanding coral reefs on Roatan make it the ideal place to indulge your love of diving. It is challenging enough for experts, but beginners won't feel out of their depths. Whether you are looking for an encounter with a whale shark or want to explore one of the shipwrecks, you will find plenty of opportunities to indulge your love of diving in Roatan. Multiple companies offer equipment rental and as little or as much guidance as you need and want.
Snorkeling
If you prefer to stay closer to the surface, Roatan is one of the most popular snorkeling destinations in the Caribbean. Off the northwest coast, the pristine coral reef provides the opportunity to view many unique and stunning underwater creatures. Starfish Alley has a seabed studded with cushioned sea stars. West End has world-class snorkeling, however, the coral reef follows the coast for more than 20 miles providing ample opportunities if you prefer a little less company. You should be able to find a quiet spot to enjoy the spectacular beauty a little more privacy.
Glass Bottom Boat Ride
If you want to get a great view of the spectacular scenery under the surface of the Caribbean surrounding Roatan without getting wet, a glass-bottom boat ride is the way to go. The whole family can participate in this adventure that provides some of the same views as a dive without the tanks.
Anthonys Key Resort
If you have ever dreamed of having a personal interaction with dolphins, Anthony's Key Resort offers several options to do just that. You can:
Play and swim with dolphins
Swim and snorkel with the dolphin pod
Dolphin dive in open water
Study and train dolphins
Dolphin summer kids camp
Hire a driver
It is easy to hire a driver to take you on a personal tour of the island. Get to see the places where The Islanders live, not just the areas where tourists and ex-pats are in the majority. This is a great activity for a day after one of your more strenuous activities.
Ziplining
If the thrill of flying through the air is something your family finds appealing, Roatan offers plenty of opportunities. Enjoy the jungle canopy as well as all the amazing wildlife. Ziplining in Roatan provides an adrenaline rush and an environmental education at the same time.
Gumbalimba Park
Gumbalimba Park offers a full day of adventure and excitement for the entire family. If interacting with white-faced monkeys, iguanas, and macaws is what you are looking for, this is the place to enjoy them in a relaxed and natural setting. Mingling with sloths is also a popular pastime. You are free to wander through botanical gardens, relax in the pool and spend a day feeling a part of the ecology of Roatan,
Travel tip:
Roatan is a popular cruise ship destination. If you are not traveling by cruise ship, try to do activities on days cruise ships are not in port. If that's not possible, try scheduling your activity for later in the day after most cruise ship passengers have returned to the ship.
